Back many years ago in New York my mother survived two street attacks late at night while walking home. At that time I was studying Jujitsu and knowing that my father was very good at Jujitsu I asked my mother if she had used a technique that dad had taught her to control the situation. Her answer was surprising to me for she said no, and showed me what she had done. She said it was an art she had learned many years before in Hamburg while in gymnast class. She didn’t know the name of it however was told that it was based on the use of spear in combat. I told her it looked strange to me but it obviously was effective. It was many years latter while studying Karate that I was exposed to Hsing-i and knew right away that I had seen those moves before. She is gone now and I never did find out if she had the correct Jin in the strikes. You see back then I didn’t have a clue about what Jin was. Now I think – what’s the difference it worked!

I find that 5 Element Xingyi looks like pieces of Xingyi Lui He Quan (6 Harmony Xingyi) animal shapes and drills strung together. Like someone learned a little bit of Xingyi Lui He Quan and tried to build a system out of the basics of the Xingyi Lui He training methods. Just my impression.
Xingyi, regardless of the system/style, is an amazing art.

Bu hao kan, Hen hao yeung is the famous Xingyiquan tag line and I agree completely! roughly that translates as; “It ain’t pretty but it works!” Xingyiquan is a great no frills practical system. Xingyiquan folks would take Chris’ story about his Ma’s NY encounter as just another example and par for the course. I wish my Ma had been so well educated
